Vince Musewe considers why the ANCYL’s solution won’t obtain “economic freedom in our lifetime”.
JOHANNESBURG – I have 20 times rifled for a thorough exposition by the ANC Youth League on solutions to obtaining economic freedom in our lifetime but remain melancholy.
As stated in my previous article I believe we need to scrupulously debate the issue. Sadly those, like the ANCYL sponsoring this vision have rather chosen to deposit many doubts and perplexities into many minds, by failing to articulate how this vision can be achieved and have, in my opinion, not demonstrated the necessary care and vigilance that such a powerful and necessary vision deserves.
South Africa’s socio-economic structures are characterized by; massive unemployment, a large number of grant recipients, poor education, lack of social service delivery and housing, corruption, unfair business practice, uncompetitive monopolies, lack of access to capital, racism, political bickering and more. These problems in my view have been well researched and articulated upon by numerous public and private organisations, interest groups, individuals, academics, politicians and government entities such as the Planning Commission and the Department of Trade and Industry amongst others. Our socio-economic structures and values as they exist, will not deliver economic freedom to the majority in this lifetime. Something must therefore be done to change them and, in my judgement, if the ANC Youth League wishes to be the chief architects, it is important that they exert their energy on contemplating on the efficacy of nationalisation or land expropriation as an antidote to the social ills we face.
I have rifled for a thorough exposition by the ANC Youth League on solutions to these matters above and remain melancholy. Instead I have seen an addictive focus on ownership of mines and land but have not grasped their strategies and ideas on how to build skills and capacity within the black majority communities for them to be able to proficiently manage these assets once they own them. Surely that must come first? Pray, someone out there, assist me on this least I expose my inanity. (more…)
